Super Mario 3D All-Stars

2020

After a long time of waiting all 3 of these classic games have finally been ported to modern consoles. This review won't really be about the quality of these 3 games, but rather the collection itself. First of all the UI. It's nothing fantastic, but it gets the job done. It doesn't really FEEL like much of a Mario menu, but it functions and is easy to figure out so I can't really say it's bad. The game includes 3 digital soundtracks, but this optional has gone almost unused and I think an actual online digital soundtrack or CD set would have been far cooler. Booting up Mario 64 I see no issues. Most of the UI and textures have been upscaled from the original N64 game and are hit or miss in quality. They can look really good and sometimes look smeary since they are upscaling from a already LQ texture. The game itself plays perfectly fine. A bit disappointing it wasn't a port from the source code so we could have proper 16:9 support, but it's whatever. Mario Sunshine was the biggest issue I had in this collection as it emulates pretty poorly. framerate can dip constantly in the hub area, since it's emulation it's capped at 30 fps so when frame drops happen it's EXTREMLY noticeable, emulation issues are everywhere so it doesn't feel accurate to the original Gamecube game . Thankfully a patch has been released to add Gamecube controller support which is a step in the right direction. Super Mario Galaxy is the best of the 3 by far. Since the game runs off a similar framework as the Switch it runs with absolutely 0 issues. Controls have multiple options which is nice for a Switch Lite user like me. Visuals look stunning in HD and really makes me appreciate how impressive this game is for the hardware. Overall the collection is a tad overpriced, but if you want to play these games for the first time it's perfectly acceptable. It goes on sale quite a lot in stores and I see a lot of copies in stock despite it being a limited run. I suggest waiting for it to go on sale for around 40 dollars or so as that is a reasonable enough price.
